I have a large number of single artist albums that are appearing under Various Artists. The underlying cause seems to be in how slimserver interprets the "Compilation" tag if it exists. On files where there is a compilation tag set to "No" slimserver assigns "Compilation: Yes" to the tracks in the library. I have reported this as Bug #2393
