As for hardware alternatives: look out for SheevaPlug and RaspberryPi on this forum. Both are cheap, are fanless, powerful and have ready to run builds with SqueezeSlave. One probably would just need an extra casing for RaspberryPi (there are some to buy out there) and then you'll have a device much like a SB Receiver.
