That was indeed the problem. I turned off `Enable musicbrainz tags' and dropped and restored the stats and startup speed is now 9 seconds rather than 2-4 hours. It is a shame to lose musicbrainz support, but I would rather live without it than live with the long startup/rescan times. Thank you for your help!
