Thanks for the explanantion.

Yes, Airport Extreme does allow WPA with a WDS system. At least, the
options are there, and WPA (as distinct from WPA2) does work with my
SB.

Given the earlier part of this thread, I suspect something is buggy
with the SB implementation of WPA2.

My latest experience trying WPA2 is that, during setup, I got a
"connected to wireless network" message. But then, when it tried to get
an address from my router this failedand it got the self-assigned
address. Then it again claimed to be connected to the wireless network,
but could not get a connection to the SlimServer.

But simple WPA seems, so far, to be working ok.
