I use an HP Microserver N40L in the UK they often sell these cheap with a cashback offer. I use a Linux operating system (ClearOS) and I have 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 array using software RAID. Works great, I was worried about using software RAID as opposed to a hardware RAID controller until I saw the price of a hardware RAID controller which is expensive and when I read most home NAS units use Software RAID I went that way.
