Thing is, I doubt version 5 worked out of the box. I suspect it's only because of people who had problems with that version and raised bugs and had them fixed that it evolved into 5.4.1 (same for 6.02). You find a problem, you report it, it gets fixed and everybody benefits. Also, without any details of the problem there's no way to tell if the problem is with SlimServer or his setup. You've only got to look at the number of posts blaming Slim that turns out to be wireless network problems. There's probably a lot of bright people here who'd love to help him fix it but they need something to work with. This is just my opinion. I hope I've phrased it so it doesn't look like I'm attacking anyone because I dont mean to.
