I'm not sure how "external soundcard" comes into the picture but if the
question is if different hardware which have SPDIF outputs can affect
sound quality even if using the same external DAC, the answer is yes.
The difference is a lot smaller compared to hardware which are using
analogue outputs (built-in DAC), but there are still differences which
some people are able to hear. For more details, look in the Audiophiles

Having said all this, I also believe that for most people the
differences are too small to be noticed, at least unless you are an
audiophile user who have spent significant money on amplifer, speakers
and other hardware in your listening setup.
