Well that's fantastic! I have a Netgear DG834G router, and had previously checked if I had the latest firmware by following the link in the router admin -- I did (v1.05). I just double checked by going through the Netgear support site, and it turns out there is a much newer firmware available (v3).
I didn't hold out much hope because nothing else was wrong with my network, but I've upgraded and now (so far, touch wood) the SB2 is connecting straight away! So perhaps there is some aspect of the way the Squeezebox implements encryption which isn't quite backwards compatible with older hardware's encryption?
