I've tried your suggestion to no avail. Mplayer just dies after
starting up. The puzzling thing is that mplayer can be run from the
terminal under the slimserver login (playing a BBC stream) with
settings as you suggest.
That does suggest a permissions issue to me. But if changing the
group does not work, I am unsure what to try.
