I don't understand the Pono product. It just seems like yet another portable music player. There are plenty of portable music players around who are able to play lossless music formats. If this is about quality, then why a portable player and why not a streamer that you can hook up to your stereo? I'm never going to 'actively' listen to music on my portable devices, but I will do so on my stereo at home. And if this is about quality, then why bother with hi-res formats? Hi-res is not a guarantee for high quality music. If quality is important then young should be talking to the music industry and try to get them 1) make good quality recordings and mixes and 2) stop compressing the hell out of the music.
