iPeng Classic (the old iPeng version) will work under iOS 4.2.1 but you need to download/purchase it directly on the device since you'd need not the latest but the second latest version (2.0.16). The App Store App on the device will allow you to download and purchase it but if you did the purchase it in iTunes you'd get version 2.0.17 which requires iOS 5.
You'll also need the additional "playback" In-App-Purchase to use iPeng as a player. Synchronization with other Squeezeboxes might not be perfect on the old device, too.
