What about plain Ubuntu server (or Ubuntu desktop with the gui). Ubuntu seems to have pretty wide hardware support so I guess it is most likely to work on your old laptop.
Don't know crashplan but Ubuntu is quite popular so if it has something for Linux it will most likely work on Ubuntu?
