As far as I am concerned (only worried about 16bit) the only real
downside of HDMI is the fact that you are also outputting video. My
Onkyo AV Receiver will only let you switch off the audio on the HDMI OUT
not the video albeit I accept you can operate the Receiver with the TV
switched off.
