I rarely have a problem with a new CD but sometimes I'll have to try 3 or 4 different optical drives on an older one, e.g. from the 80s or 90s. Usually I can get one of them to give me a clean rip. I've also had just the CD laser fail in 2 DVD and 1 BR multidrives. Apparently there is a limit to just how many discs one of them can read.
