Sorry didn't answer your question. No they aren't the same. With the dock the Ruark DAC is used and the Ruark volume control is the only one you would use. If you use the headphone jack then the iPod DAC is used and you will get two volume controls. One on the iPod and one on the Ruark. The dock is therefore infinitely preferable.
