I doubt that it is anything to do with it, thats poorly (aqueous)
cleaned flux from soldering, on the right you can still see some small
beads of flux

The two soldered connections above are interesting though, they look
hand soldered. 

and as to your second question, Pi2 + DAC+ + piCorePlayer is a great
replacement, depending on how you control it you may want to add the Pi
Touchscreen
