The log showed an error message "cannot read/create /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/artwork.db". I checked the directory and that file was present with apparently correct permissions. So I guess perhaps it was corrupted in some way. I deleted it, restarted squeezeboxserver, and everything is now fine.
