Have you looked at using Sveta Portable Audio at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/sveta-portable-audio.htm? It allows you to keep your files in one format and then when you want to move them over to a portable device you just select the format to move them over in and it does the conversion on the fly. There is no need for you to keep 2 separate copies of your music.
