Wow guys. With my initial questions I was neither proposing some firmware reverse engineering effort nor expecting an expensive official support solution. There was an open bug report in the current database that appears to have been under investigation for quite some time; I was trying to get the status. I *was* considering even upgrading to a newer box if that is what it would take. I'm also still interested in knowing if the existing box is extensible enough to add such a feature without any firmware backport (such as through the trick I suggested, not reverse engineering).
