Well, I hate to say this but I think your intuition is spot on. If it's a hardware problem, it must be one that is more of a conifguration isssue than a hardware "failure." I've been having precisely the same problem on my system with the 6.x versions and I've seen similar messages from a few others. I've tried reinstalling over-and-over again with the same problem... rescan crashes the server and perl interpreter failed in the EL. 5.4.1 always works fine with no such problems. Same system, same files, same settings.
