I am not in the US and cannot receiver iHeart. I believe the reason are * The stations will get ad additional revenue by playing stream via an App - there are no visual ads on internet radio applicances. * The m3u8/HLS stream is Apple proprietary format and also more flexible in terms of network usage - possibly reduce costs.
