If Logitech documented the signals from the Transnav knob to the main
board then ... perhaps someone could make a cheap alternative that does
the basic push and turn.

The Knob wasn't a simple encoder, but a programmable unit. Eg. firmware did create "virtual borders" at which the know would stop to rotate (beginning/end of menus), etc. That's what made it that expensive (I think it was > 50 USD at the time!).
