The music is the same but the delivery mechanism for Internet-accessible music has been changing ... e.g. more https, higher bit rate services, other protocols (eg hls). LMS is able to hide much of that for our devices but Sonos works in a different way. I could believe that their old devices are somewhere near the limit of their capability but my guess is that it is becoming hard for them to write software that works across the entire range (where old kit has different chips) plus the extra time it takes to test everything against the full set of hardware increases their costs.
Their communication of this on top of the bricking of kit to get a discount on upgrade does seem very poor.
