Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I did rule out syncing w/ other players, as it happens when playing by itself, so it doesn't seem that another lagging player is causing it.
I haven't tried ethernet, as I don't have any wired connections close enough to do so. I guess I could add a wireless bridge to potentially avoid the built-in wireless (an alternative to philippe_44's suggestion of moving the antenna internally), but I wouldn't want to permanently have another external component cluttering the area where I have the receiver & speakers. I might try picore player w/ a spare pi that I have lying around. I remember in the early days of squeezelite, synchronization didn't work well (which I do use in the room occasionally), but I think it has likely improved since ~2013, so I'll give that a shot. I do have an enclosure w/ usb dac, so the audio quality should be decent enough.
