I do not know if this will help at all ... but I suggest putting the asound.conf back the way it was suggested and change #SL_SOUNDCARD line to SL_SOUNDCARD="default"
i.e. take out the # and set the device to "default" (which should be the "Equal" device. Then reboot. I expect that Squeezelite will exit if it behaves like you described before - and squeezelite -l will not list the "Equal" device. If that happens try aplay -L (upper case elle) and we can try to diagnose what is going wrong in Alsa.
