Turning back on the b/g protection did the trick. I think it was on from the start but the other settings likely needed to be changed as detailed above for the Booms to connect. So I left my office Boom connected to ethernet anyway. And now I have three more functional Booms and a slew of Picoreplayers that I mainly use as remotes. No need to move away from my current ecosystem.
