Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will weigh in
here because the subject interests me too.
But note the VFD technology has been used on VCRs
for decades now. Apparently the only "wear" on
the VFDs is that they get slightly dimmer over time.
Have you ever had a VCR VFD fail? I haven't. And
it's on all the time, with certain segments on for
hours at a time.
Now the VFDs in the SBs are much more
sophisticated than even the VFDs used in A/V
receivers, but still, the technology is the same.
