Shifty, I reinstalled XP ontop of my existing install, reinstalled Slimserver, then performed Windows Update and got it working fine.
I just saw this in the wiki. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ServerIsAlreadyRunning Describes the same problem we were having and links to a piece of software, I did not try the software. The Windows install took some time but was realtively painless.
