On second thought, you already said that you tried replacing the NUC
with a NanoPi M4 and had no skips. That suggests that the problem may
well be with the NUC, perhaps both USB ports, as d6jg suggested. With
that in mind, my latest suggestion is that you go back to the NanoPi and
continue using it long enough to feel confident that the skips are no
longer occurring. If you do, eventually, hear skips with the NanoPi,
then it's probably time to investigate the rest of the signal path.
