Interesting how times have changed. I was at a startup in 1999,
OneBigCD.com that offered exactly that service. We 
had 40,000 CDs ripped and compressed, in 10 format/speed
combinations. We had RIAA blessing, were anti-piracy,
pro-record sales, etc. You had to put your CD in a computer drive,
which unlocked our database of files. You could play your paid for tunes
anywhere.

Then the same Michael Robertson put out his original mp3.com
blew off the labels and RIAA and crashed the whole industry.

I always liked the idea, as ripping CDs is a royal PITA.
