Sales Tax (US version of VAT) is a little weird (well, from the POV of
a brit like myself anyway!). Firstly, it varies from state to state
(around 6% here in NJ, but the other side of the river in NY it's over
8%).

Secondly, it's never quoted in advertised prices - so the price you see
on the tag is rarely the price you pay. This applies to retail stores as
well as online purchases, and is seriously annoying - "I'll buy this
item for $0.99, as I have a dollar in my pocket - whoops - it's
actually $1.07!".

Thirdly, you often don't pay sales tax at all for online purchases. The
idea is that interstate commerce isn't taxed, so if I live in NJ and buy
from CA, there's no tax. However, if the company in question have an
office in NJ (however tiny), then it's not considered interstate. And
some states have recently changed their laws to allow them to try and
recover the "lost" income from this kind of thing.

So all in all, 5 different people in the US buying the same product can
end up paying 5 different prices.
