So I use a Mac, and most of my music is on a laptop. Last year I had a

So what i sthe best way to back up music on a Mac? Is there an easy
way to get iTunes to access an external harddrive, or should I just
burn everything to DVDs?

I would burn everything to DVDs - it's not like the music is going to change.

I recommend backing up to an external hard drive (or drives) rather than (or at least in addition to) burning DVDs.

Hard drives have gotten really cheap. External drives are now less than $1/GB, and some internal drives are below half that cost. But even more important, hard drives are *much* roomier than DVDs so you don't have to keep switching disks during your backup.

Writing to a hard drive is also *much* faster then writing to a DVD. Combined, these two features of hard drives makes it much more likely that you actually will spend the time to keep your backups complete and up to date.

Also consider giving yourself some protection against drive failure with RAID. My ripped CD collection sits on a RAID-5 array, and that is in turn backed up on offline hard drives. We also keep the original CDs off site, making them less of a target for burglars.
