Well based on my experience with the
SMC2804WBRP-G, I would suspect the router.
There was nothing I could do to get an SB2 to
connect. MAC filtering disabled, encryption
disabled, SSID broadcast enabled, nothing. I
could see the SSID when I enabled broadcast but it
still couldn't connect.
The firmware for the 2804 is a horror show. There
are ~12 versions. Each one disabled something
different in the network. Based on the radically
different performance and problems I experienced
with each firmware version, I strongly suspected
it was poor firmware that just wouldn't allow the
2804 to connect.
Some firmware disabled fundamental networking
features like DHCP, DNS resolution, wired ports etc.
I swapped it out for a Linksys WRT54G. Worked
from first try with both stock firmware and DD-WRT
3rd party firmware. Unfortunately it doesn't have
the wireless speed the SMC did, but I'm willing to
give that up for the SB.
So try the latest firmware with the SMC, or play
whack-a-mole with the prior firmware versions, or
get another router.
