Great idea, Steve! Put the alpha keys on the soft buttons. Just did it: works beautifully. Now I can set up Lazy searching!
As a matter of interest, I have the three bottom macro buttons do the set up for three different scenarios: 1 for watching live TV, 2 for watching/recording on the DVD-Recorder, 3 for listening to music on Squeezebox. Never (under normal circumstances that my wife would encounter) need to manually change device. I guess that that means I can use the soft buttons without things getting confusing, as the devices get changed by the macros instead of manually. Now if I can just train the dog not to wag its big fat tail on the front panel of the receiver then I'll be all set.
