The COMPRESSED does not matter from a user perspective, at least not
if you don't specify how much compression you'd like, for example in
hours of music per GB.

The WITHOUT NEED FOR INTERMEDIATE SERVER-SIDE TRANSCODING is not part
of the problem but part of your proposed solution. It's most of the
time better to keep the two apart.

Sounds good. Since you worked for them, just call up a contact and
lobby a little.

I'd rather the next SB would not be even more expensive. I don't like
paying for licenses I'll never use, and I don't like to support stuff
that uses closed file formats. WMA in the SB3 is bad enough, really :)
