Munge - yes, slimserver does have an SQL database. SQLite in 6.2, moving to Mysql. If you are using 6.1.1 you might want to try a more recent 6.2.2 nightly. This is an area of continuing work. Though that does sound like an underpowered machine.
Bruce - could you explain some more about where/what/how you are doing? Most of the browse behaviours go to Albums as the second step, but Browse by Genre for me does as Munge describes, with an extra Artists step in between. Perhaps report your version and platform as well?
