Funkstar is right. Most network connections are designed to connect to a hub.
Some network connections are able to auto-sense if they are connected to a hub or directly to a single other device. Either end can do this auto-sensing, but I'm pretty sure the SB doesn't. So that means either 1. your laptop needs to have that feature or 2. you need a cross-over cable or 3. it's not going to work But cross-over cables are easy to find, at your local computer store. I have one and I run an SB over it from time to time. Works great. The other thing to understand in that "bare bones" environment is that you have no DHCP server, so you must do your own IP static address assignment, something that you don't need to fuss with when you have an even halfways modern router.
