I did a full uninstall/re-install, and that fixed everything... I'm not sure what corrupted my database - it was either the installer or the removal of an entire disk volume via deletion of the shortcut to it. I now believe that the "perl interpreter failed" was probably related to resource constraints on my system... actually, it might have been that crash that corrupted my database.
