Is it possible your wife's employer is blocking http traffic to those sites?
I'd try manually entering the 34.35.36.37:9000 just to eliminate the intermediaries. The telnet trick is a good one, too. Good luck. I ran SlimServer from home and listened at work through iTunes for awhile before buying my Squeezebox.
