I use ALAC and have had no problems at all. Mac Mini running OSX 10.4.4 with music on external La Cie HD, Netgear WGR614 Router + SB3 and 2 x SB2. SB3 uses optical digital out into Musical Fidelity DAC. SB2s use analog out into Arcam and Cambridge Audio amps.
