Well the font selection seemed to be the problem. When I scrolled down to
the FONT boxes, they were completely empty. I selected Standard for both
FONT and STANDBY FONT, and the doubling went away.

what fonts are listed for "Font" and "Standby Font"
By default, it should be standard for both.
If this not the case for you, I suspect your prefs file wasn't the right
one (dunno how that could have been).
As a sanity check, what is listed in the pulldowns? They should have:
full
high
light
standard
-kdf
