I experienced something very similar when I was using WMP to tag my files. Even though the artist tag looks the same in one piece of software, it is (not sure if this is actually, or just perceived by Slimserver) seen as two different artists.
The fact that it seems to be fine, then gets bad again may be because of the ITunes database refresh if you are using ITunes to tag your files. I would suggest downloading a third party tagging program. I use Tag & Rename which has a free 30 day trial, but some people find it overly complicated. Select the album that is giving your trouble and force a retag of the *artist* field for *all* of the songs in the album. Not just the song that is giving you trouble. Then select clear and rescan library in Slimserver. That should sort the problem out.
