I've been off the air while a build a dedicated slimserver box. It looks like this issue may be resolved - I downgraded to firmware 28 and slimserver 6.2.1 5194 and the player is running with a 100% buffer and playing like a dream.
Just to confirm, I upgraded to the latest nightly and the problem re-occured with a vengence.
