I was thinking in terms of a playlist of selections from different
albums. In general, I would not want songs to fade in ... unless a
selection in the playlist is a track that sounds WEIRD not fading in,
like a track from a live album.

Regarding a), then maybe SlimServer could examine the *album* track
preceeding the next *playlist* track to check for a gap.
