There are LOADs of threads on this, mostly in the beginners forum, this is quite common issue ... the 169.254 address isn't dodgy as such, its just what devices allocate themselves when they can't find a DHCP server. From that point on you are doomed! If assigning a manual IP address works, I'd say that was a result and leave it alone (others have had to do the same). Wireless is still a bit of a black art, it seems.
