Are you doing anything unusual with your wireless network? Encryption key renewal, for example?
Sounds like something on your network is changing which the Squeezebox misses. Needless to say, what you're experiencing is not normal. Provided your SlimServer is running, it should immediately wake up. In fact, it will start playing if you press PLAY. Do you have a screensaver enabled? Try the Date and Time screensaver. It will show the date and time until it loses contact with SlimServer, and if you're in the room, you'll see when this happens. If you have a firewall program on the SlimServer machine, it may show a graph or traffic. The Squeezebox always maintains very light traffic to SlimServer. This may also give an indication when it dropped off.
