I quite like http://damnsmalllinux.org/ and have used it in several
embedded applications.
I think SlimCD is either a branch off of it,
It's DSL -some "heavy" applications +perl +slimserver
You may want to consider CF on an CF to IDE adapter
for the boot drive instead.
That's my setup. And use the "frugal" install as flash memory should not
be written to too often. frugal will basically copy the CD image to your
flash medium, run everything in RAM and at the end of the day (or when you
tell it to do so) backup to the flash. In between there's no write access.
