The SB3 does not draw enough power to reliably trigger one of those things.
There's an extensive chart out there somewhere which shows the current draw when in standby, playing, display off, etc. but IIRC you can assume 1.2A draw at 5V. That's only 6W. The power supply itself is only rated at 2A = 10W at 5V. There were a few solutions proposed and I believe someone came up with a circuit that definitely involves soldering. There's a non-soldering solution involving an IR-triggered power strip with the SB3 IR blaster. This power strip is available in the UK.
