Lossless and Open Source are both good, as long as the format catches
on.  Some do and some don't.  It does seem like a good choice for
storing a "master" format as is my interest.

Am I understanding you correctly that things like WMP or RealPlayer can
do a client-side format conversion through a plug-in that is transparent
to the user?  That is, the server would send the file in FLAC format,
and the client computer does the conversion on the fly, as opposed to
having the server do it.
