I haven't heard of that solution - and I don't have any experience with any of these devices. The rule of thumb is pretty simple: if the device is running Linux (which is very likely) _and_ you can get access to the devices' Linux through a shell then it's technically conceivable. But there are devices which are better explored than others. The Buffalo Linkstation was one of the first to be hacked. Others report success with the Linksys NSLU or Synology Diskstation. And there are now some solutions sold commercially like the Qnap TS-101, which come with Slimserver support installed. Search the forums for the latter - there's been a _lot_ of talk about it.
